Medicare has recently received information that a person or persons are attempting to obtain Medicare information from beneficiaries by going door-to-door. The solicitor claims to be a representative of Medicare and requests individual beneficiary information claiming that a new Medicare card will soon be issued. It is not the policy or practice for Medicare to go door-to-door to inform you of changes. The standard way we notify you of changes in the Medicare program is through the mail. Occasionally, Medicare will contact beneficiaries in order to conduct surveys. Real Medicare survey takers will always have Medicare identification and a letter of introduction, and they will never ask you for your Medicare number. If a solicitor who claims to be a Medicare representative approaches you, you should ask for identification. Do not give them your Medicare number or any other personal information. Have them leave the information along with a mailing address. Report suspicious behavior immediately. Call your Medicare office or the Inspector General's Fraud Hotline to report that someone claiming to be a Medicare representative has approached you in an attempt to obtain your Medicare information. With your help we can prevent dishonest people from using your Medicare number to commit fraud in the Medicare program! REPORT MEDICARE FRAUD Inspector General's Hotline |
